Discover the Stories That Built Western New York

Enjoy the WNY Tombstone Trail 250

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, a remarkable journey through the past is being offered across Western New York.

The WNY Tombstone Trail 250 is a unique regional experience that invites residents, families, history enthusiasts, students, and visitors to explore 26 historic cemeteries throughout Erie County and Western New York. More than resting places, these cemeteries are outdoor living museums filled with extraordinary stories waiting to be discovered.

Presented by the Erie County Historical Commission and funded by Erie County, the project is part of the region's official commemoration of America's Semiquincentennial.

26 Cemeteries. Hundreds of Stories. One American Journey

Along the WNY Tombstone Trail 250, you'll meet the immigrants who left their homelands in search of opportunity, the veterans who served their country, the workers who built industries, the abolitionists who fought for freedom, and the civic leaders who helped shape the communities we call home today.

Their lives tell the story of Western New York—and the story of America.

This is a cemetery

Lives are commemorated, deaths are recorded, families are reunited, memories are made tangible and love is undisguised.

This is a cemetery.

Communities accord respect, families bestow reverence, historians seek information and our heritage is thereby enriched.

Testimonies of devotion, pride and remembrance are carved in stone to pay warm tribute to accomplishments and to the life -- not death -- of a loved one.

The cemetery is a homeland for family memorials that are a sustaining source of comfort for the living.

A cemetery is a history of people, a perpetual record of yesterday and a sanctuary of peace and quiet today.

A cemetery exists because every life is worth loving and remembering- always.
